Mental note to Self: Surprise the child that it is his/ her birthday on the DAY of his/ her birthday...
I thought the anticipation and build up to James' birthday might be fun. Ha ha ha! So, on Sunday I made the mistake of making a huge deal about his upcoming big day. I told him all about the fire truck party we were planning with all of his friends coming over. I told him I would be making him a fire truck cake... I even had the brilliant idea to show him the fire truck toy he was getting before I wrapped it. Brilliant. Well, after the build up came the whining, the demanding, and the broken record of: "I want, I want, I want."
After a day of this craziness I pulled out the calendar and stickers and tried to explain to my almost- three year old that his birthday was not until Thursday. This was about as clear as mud, so we made a little countdown chart like the one Curious George makes for Christmas (only we stuck with the delightful fire truck theme). This worked pretty well, but it still didn't solve the "I want my fire truck birthday party," and the "I want my friends over for my fire truck party," I want my fire truck cake," I want my fire truck, "I want, I want, I want."
Finally, by Thursday I couldn't believe how my almost three year old had gnawed through my skin and camped out in there. With nerves on end, I locked myself in the bathroom for the second time this week and wrote this text to Mikey: "I just locked myself in the bathroom with the fan on. Can't hear the word "want" again!!!" Luckily for us, Mike works 1 1/2 miles away and was able to come home and help out!
At least it was a fun and successful day for him! You always outdo yourself... just kidding! I'm glad he had a great day and that you survived it all! Now you have some time to recover before then next big birthday comes around! (Blake will turn 5 this Thursday, so we are dealing with the long list of "wants" for his big day!)
ReplyDeleteIt's good practice, because by next year, he'll probably be counting the days to his birthday by himself - my three year old is already saying 'how long til my birthday?' which is in MAY!
ReplyDeleteAND James will be old enough to tell Daniel when his birthday is coming and get the both of them all wired up about it! See, it just gets better and better! :-)
It actually is fun when they get all excited about it (by themselves) though!
Grandma says - I remember those days - that's what paper chains are for in December. Birthday's can be a well kept secret when they're little. Jeanette was so excited for her 4th birthday - she fell asleep in the middle of it!
ReplyDeleteHey! I resemble that remark! :P
ReplyDeleteRobin, isn't it fun how we learn the lesson AFTER we need to know it?
