An Ode to Summer

Katelyn and her "pet" Daniel

James swam the width of Ama's Pool-- hooray, James!

The rocking floaty lulled Andrew to sleep

Summer, you are…
Soggy beach towels on the back porch
Sand in the trunk of the car
Sleeping with open windows and the music of Crickets
The smell of sunblock, bug spray, and sweat
Misquito bites, tadpoles, frogs
Fresh tomatoes and zuchinni from the garden
Tinfoil dinners up the canyon and
Campouts with s’mores in the backyard.

Sleep deprivation from late nights and
Early morning bike rides.
A  garage cluttered with bikes, sand toys, and water floaties
Laundry piled high, a sink full of dishes, dirty floors
Trips to the zoo. Playdates at the park. Sand at the lake
Afternoons swimming at Ama’s house
Creative play with the irrigation water in the back yard
You are Evening neighborhood walks and
Sunday neighborhood dessert night.
Jumping on the trampoline. Swings. Climbing.
Soccer. Tee ball. Frisbee.
Lawn mowers humming in the distance on Saturday mornings
Dinner cooking on the grill
Flowers in bloom
Blue Jays and robins awake an singing before the sun
The smell of pansies on my front porch
Ball bugs that entertain the boys for hours
Splash pads and Monday nights at the garden
You are an opportunity to say YES without hesitation and
to be present during these longer days which, somehow, fly by quicker than the rest.

You are all the things that revive us after a wet spring,
and your memories are what sustain us through the cold months of winter.

You only just arrived, and already, you are gone.

How we'll miss you.

  1. Thanks for the update...it helps me feel not quite so far away :). I love the pics, calling Dan Dan "Katelyn's pet", I never thought of that but how true...she finally has her "puppy". Also love the poem and marvel at how full your summer was and how much you cherished every moment (almost).
